Internal Medicine Physician Shadowing Instructions

Mondays-Fridays

Option 1:

~6:30AM/~7:00AM/~7:30AM   TO  9:30AM

Pre-Rounding with Intern Physicians

Before the “real” Rounding session, Interns ( Interns are Medical Doctors who are in their Internal Medicine residencies) are required to conduct a Pre-Rounding Session to collect data and other information from their patients so they can present at the real Rounding Session. This is a ONE-on-ONE interaction between YOU and the Intern Physician. Starting times differ because Interns can choose whatever time they want to conduct their Pre-Rounding sessions. The best time to start is at 7:00AM because most Interns are present in the room at this time.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Go directly to Room 7132 in the 7E Medicine Unit at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center at ~7:00AM
  2. Communicate with Physician(s) present to let them know who you are, what you are doing, and what you need to do
  3. Shadow Intern Physician while they conduct their Pre-Rounding Sessions
  4. Make ONE (1) Copy of your observations
  5. Go to Suite Room 7236E (middle of hallway between East and West elevators) to turn in your ONE Copy to the Chief Resident(s)
  6. If Room 7236E is closed/locked, then give your observation to Leeah, an employee who sits on the right side of  Room 7236E
  7. If Leeah is not there, then slip your copy under the door of Room 7236E

Option 2:

~9:30AM/~10:00AM  TO ~10:30AM/~11:00AM/~12:00PM

Rounding with Interns, Residents,

Attendings, Medical Students, and Nurses

Usually, Roundings are split up in FIVE teams (A-E) at 9:30AM. This is not a guaranteed time because depending on the Attending Physician, he or she could start their Roundings earlier or later (9:20AM for example or 10:00AM for example). The best time to come is at 9:20AM because most teams are relatively ready at this point. There are FIVE (A-E) teams during this general Rounding Session. During this event, the whole team visits their respective patients. The team includes: Intern Physicians, Resident Physicians, Attending Physicians, Nurses, and UCLA David Geffen Medical Students. Interns present patient cases to their Attending Physicians and discussions take place on causes, diagnosis, treatment, etc. This is a Shadowing Job for the WHOLE TEAM, not an ONE-on-ONE interaction.

Team Paths

(in order of visit of each team)

Team A: Nursing Units, 7W, 7E, 5E, GONDA DOT

Team B: 7W, 7E, 5E, GONDA DOT, Remaining unfinished floors

Team C: 7E, 5E, GONDA DOT, Remaining unfinished floors

Team D: 5E, GONDA DOT, 7W, 7E

Team E: GONDA DOT, Various floors, 7W, 7E, 5E

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Directly go to Room 7134 at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center at ~9:30AM
  2. Communicate with Physician(s) in room to let them know who you are, what you are doing, and what you need from them.
  3. Write down their team letter on your observation, for example Team A, B, C, D, or E
  4. Shadow the whole team for the entire time or until you have to leave (ending time is uncertain)
  5. Make ONE (1) Copy of your observations
  6. Go to Suite Room 7236E (middle of hallway between East and West elevators) to turn in your ONE Copy to the Chief Resident(s)
  7. If Room 7236E is closed/locked, then give your observation to Leeah, an employee who sits on the right side of  Room 7236E
  8. If Leeah is not there, then slip your copy under the door of Room 7236E

Option 3:

Do both Pre-Rounding Sessions with the ONE Intern AND General Rounding Sessions with the whole team

Saturdays & Sundays

Although Interns, Residents, Attendings, Medical Students, & Nurses work during the weekends every weekend, times for Roundings are not definite because they all play it by ear based on what the current Attending Physician decides. If you want to volunteer and shadow the Roundings during the weekends, you have to do a bit of work.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Dial (310) 267-7712 (from MAPS Office or your Home) to speak to a current Intern or Resident on duty in Room 7134 at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center at around ~8:30AM, ~9:00AM, and/or  ~9:30AM
  2. If nobody picks up, then nobody is in the room.
  3. If somebody answers, then let them know who you are, what you want to do, and ask them when they are conducting their Roundings with their Attending Physician(s)
  4. If you are a Risk Taker, then directly go to Room 7134 at ~9:00AM-9:30AM to see if any Intern or Residents are present in the room (could do this while you are doing other floors for MAPS)
  5. If their schedule fits with your schedule for the current day, then volunteer and shadow the Rounding Team
  6. Make ONE (1) Copy of your observations
  7. Go to Suite Room 7236E (middle of hallway between East and West elevators) to turn in your ONE Copy to the Chief Resident(s)
  8. If Room 7236E is closed/locked, then slip your copy under the door of Room 7236E
